Team culture involves the behaviors expected of each other, the level of work ethic desired, attitude toward each other and the coaches, and having a shared vision of goals. A positive team culture does not just happen, it is built. Coaches can try to build a championship culture, but the most successful teams have players who are effective leaders, who build the culture. Kaylee Miller is one of those leaders who has the ability to change the direction and culture of a team. She shares her beliefs about how to be an effective leader, and what she has to say is outstanding advice for all of us.
Here are Kaylee’s thoughts on leadership…
"How to be an effective leader is really a loaded question, because there are endless ways. The way that worked for me was to lead by example. You should never expect anyone to do anything that you aren’t doing. If you want to be on a team where everyone works hard, work hard. If you want a team that shares a close bond, be a good friend. If you want people to support you, go out of your way to be supportive. If you want to make mistakes without ridicule, comfort your teammates during times of struggle. If you want your team to listen to your coach, always accept coaching. The list goes on and on."
"Other than being an example, you should want to show your teammates you care, respect, and love them, through success and defeat. This type of support ensures a good team bond that is conducive for leadership from everyone. There is no secret to being an effective leader, except that you must recognize there is never a shortage of opportunities to be one. Realize that even the smallest of things you do can change the culture of your team-- for good or bad." - Kaylee Miller
