Athletes’ Insights:- Snow Days, Road Trips, Inspiration

This week the athletes share feelings about the new athletic facility at Wicall, snow days, sports travel experiences, and inspirational teammates.

Amyah Pruitt- Galesburg, Junior

Wrestling, Tennis

What is the best part of the new athletic facility at Wicall?

My absolute favorite addition to wicall is definitely the wrestling room of course. The new wrestling room has given us wrestlers a place to call home and has also given us way more space than the balcony we were recently practicing in.

What is good and bad about snow days?

I love snow days because I get to sleep in, but they can get boring when you don’t have anything planned for the day.

What is the best sports road trip you have been on?

The best sports trip I have been on is definitely our yearly Iron Sharpens Iron Camp for wrestling. It’s really fun and you get to meet lots of new people that share the same interests as you. Iron Sharpens Iron is a wrestling camp at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois.

Who is a teammate who may not be a star but inspired you?

Hannah Almendarez is definitely someone who has inspired me and still does, she shows up to all of our meets and even coached us girls. Hannah is a great wrestler and coach and a great friend. Something that makes Hannah so inspiring is definitely her strength, and dedication to work for what she wants, she pushes others while also leading by example.

Izzy Kennedy- Galesburg, Soph

Swimming, Basketball, Track

What is the best part of the new athletic facility at Wicall?

In my opinion, the best part is the new weight room, because there’s so much more space and new equipment that is in better condition.

What is the best and worst parts of a snow day at school?

The best part of snow days is definitely sleeping in.  The worst part is having to make up the days at the end of the year or having more work to do as a result of the missed days.

What is the best sports road trip you have been on?

The best road trip for me was for the Run for the Roses tournament last summer. It was really fun, because my family all came to watch me play. It was also fun to hang out with my HOI teammates in Kentucky. It was a great experience as a player, and I was fortunate to get the opportunity!

Who has been a teammate who was not a star but inspired you?

A teammate that has inspired me always is a player who is confident in what they do, supports her teammates on and off the court, and she is always giving all whether it’s in practice or in games. This teammate is a hard worker and is willing to consistently work hard to reach her goals.

Lily Furrow- Galesburg, Senior

Swimming, Basketball, Track

What is the best part of the new athletic facility at Wicall?

I’m mainly in the weight room, but I love the space and how nice everything is. I don’t have to worry about being in someone’s way or the being in mine.

What is the best and worst of a snow day at school?

The best part is not having school or the work involved, the worst part is the cold. I hate the cold.

What has been your best sports road trip?

I’ve had many great spots road trips but one that stands out the most to me is traveling to state meets for both swim and track. I’m with all my friends, staying in the same hotel and having fun. Most of my family comes to see me too so it’s like a big family reunion. At track, I’ve been able to medal 2/3 years, hoping to make it my 3 this year, so standing on the podium in front of the crowd is awesome.

Who is a teammate who was not a star who inspired you?

During basketball season, this teammate works harder than everyone else. Even when no one else is. She’s always grabbing rebounds, going for loose balls, and having fun on the side as well. I love being around her during the season cause she has the same work ethic as me. Doubling more than one sport, but still putting the effort into both.

Stone Thiel- Galesburg, Senior

What is the best sports road trip you have had?

Best sport road trip was probably my AAU tournaments to Austin Tx, just having fun with the guys in the hotel and enjoying the summer AAU ball

Who is a teammate you have had who was not a star but inspired you?

Definitely my old teammate Tristan, he was necessarily the “star” but he would always leave his heart out on the floor showing us under classmen what it means to him! So he definitely inspired me to

One of the best sports road trips I’ve taken is either Mattoon, the Chicago Bulls trip, or traveling for aau with a friend and my family.

Who is a teammate who was not a star but inspired you?

A teammate inspired me with their hardworking mindset and never giving up even if they were sick, hurt, or having a down day. They always had a good attitude with the team.

Grady Hickey- Galesburg, Sophomore

Football, Basketball, Baseball

What is the best part of the new athletic facility at Wicall?

My favorite part of the new addition on Wicall Gym is the turf baseball room that they installed. During P.E, we go do our jumps and we can also sprint in there.

What is the best and worst of a snow days at school?

The best part of a snow day at school is being able to sleep in and also not having any work to do. The worst part about it is the next day I feel so much more tired and we have to make the day up at the end of the year.

What has been your best sports road trip?

The best sports trip I have ever taken was this year when we went to the Dekalb tournament for basketball. It was really fun hanging out with the team in the hotel before and after our games.

Who is a teammate who was not a star but inspired you?

A teammate that was inspiring to me was a few years older than me but kept pushing me to be better and they always had a positive attitude towards coaches and teammates

Antonia Kisler- Sandburg, Sophomore

Basketball

Best class at CSC?

The best class I’ve taken at Carl Sandburg would probably have to be chemistry or anatomy and physiology! I enjoy science a lot!

The best part of a “no school- snow day?” The worst part about it?

The best part of a snow day would be to relax at home and get cleaning done. The worst part is that I’m stuck home all day with my siblings too.

Best sports road trip you have ever taken? What made it great?

The best sports road trip I’ve ever taken was probably one last year we went up to Triton (Chicago area) to play and lost, and then got chewed out by coach where he honked the horn on accident with his butt while yelling at us in the bus. Then we stayed the night in a hotel where we all had a great time bonding, then played in Madison the next day and had a great win.

Who is someone you have been on the team with, who was not a “star” of your team, but they inspired you?

I had a teammate last year who was the absolute best teammate you could ask for. She was compassionate, held you accountable, hyped everyone up, and pushed everyone to be better. She is the most kind person. I am inspired by her to keep being compassionate and continue to encourage everyone every day!

Olivia Hanlon- Denver East, Sophomore

Basketball

Being in Denver with multiple pro teams, who are your favorite pros to get to watch?

Watching Jokic and Bo Nix play is one of my favorite things to do living in Denver. They are both so skilled at what they do and they make it very interesting to watch their games.

What is the best and worst of snow days at school?

The best part of snow days are getting caught up on sleep, school work and anything else, but the worst part is it’s too cold to go outside to do anything.

What has been your best sports road trip?

The best sports road trip I have ever taken was going to New York with my high school team. We had a great tournament and we got to sight see and experience New York.

Who is a teammate who was not a star but inspired you?

A teammate inspired me by their joy and their care for their teammates even though they aren’t playing or being the star of the team. The energy they brought helped our team just as much as the ones playing.

Anthony Makwala- Galesburg, Senior

Wrestling, Soccer

What is the best part of the new athletic facility at Wicall?

The best part of the new complex has to be the huge wrestling room. It’s so spacious and has high ropes, pull up bars the whole package!

What is the best and worst of snow days?

Well the fact that there’s no school, I can sleep in, and stay warm because I hate the cold. The worst part is that I feel lazy, but we get to still have practice which makes my day productive.

What is your best sports travel experience?

I’ve had so many great memories of road trips, my tied ones have to be one on the way to Kansas City for soccer when we went in a van and had Casey’s pizza boxes stacked to the ceiling and played Jenga in a moving car. Or when I went to Cincinnati that hotel room was peak cinema!

Describe a teammate who may not have been a star but inspired you?

Chace Parcel in my opinion inspired me, not the biggest, not the fastest, but always there. I watched him play and was always happy and always trusted his judgment he worked really hard to make up for his set backs. Very elusive, great balance, dribbling skills great, it was a great things to see and it pushed me definitely to get better.
