Streaks Boys Basketball: 33 Memorable Games






















There have been many great games in the history of Galesburg HS boys basketball. Here are 33 “Memorable Games.” 

These games are listed in chronological order. If you think there are games missing, share them in the comments on the blog. And if you want to add memories or details about any of the games, share them in the comments on the blog. 


Silver Streaks Boys Basketball

1912- Galesburg 36- Decatur 23 (State Semi-Finals)
This game was in the semi-finals of the State Tourney. At this time only six teams advanced to State. Teams who lost in the first round, had a chance to play back. Galesburg lost to Decatur 27-26 in the first round. Galesburg won in the consolation side and beat Decatur in a rematch and advanced to the State Championship game and lost. 































1913- Galesburg 37- Peoria 
Manual 36 (State Championship Game)
Galesburg opened the season with a 37-20 loss to Peoria Manual. Galesburg did not lose again that season, going undefeated and winning the State Championship. Herbert Phil was considered the best player in Illinois, he was one of Galesburg’s all-time great players. 




























1929- Galesburg 15- Pekin 13 (4 OT’s) (Sectional)
In a low scoring slug-fest Chuck Bednar and his team beat Pekin in the 4th OT to win this Sectional matchup. Coke Mills hit the game winner.



































1931- Galesburg 28- Johnson City 27 (State Semi-Finals)
Future University of Illinois star, Coke Mills put in the winning basket for the Galesburg Red Devils. The Red Devils lost in the State Championship game to take second place.
































1935- Galesburg 21- Springfield 17 (Opening Night of Steele Gym)
Galesburg hosted perennial state power, Springfield on opening night of Steele Gym.  The Silver Streaks did not lose again until in the Sweet 16. Springfield was led by Herb Scheffler. Springfield went onto to win the State Championship that season. Scheffler’s son, Bill was a key player on the Springfield team that lost to Galesburg in 1966. 


































1945- Decatur 73- Galesburg 72 (OT) (Elite Eight)
The 1945 Streaks is one of those teams that people think was capable of winning State. They were high scoring group. This game set a State Record at the time for most points scored by two teams. Some labeled this game as the best in State Tourney history up to that point. Decatur went onto to win State. Future GHS coaches, Bob Johns and George Lundeen were on this team. 






























1955- Elgin 66- Galesburg 60 (OT) (Elite Eight)
The Streaks lost a heartbreaker to Elgin. The Streaks were led by Bill Graning, Russ Lind, and Mike Owens. In this game, Owens and Gene Youngquist led the Streaks in scoring. 




























1956- Rockford West 66- Galesburg 64 (2-OT) (Super-Sectional)
This was John Thiel’s first year as coach. The Streaks returned their entire lineup from the ‘55 Elite 8 team. The game was played at Wharton Fieldhouse. Mike Owens led the Streaks with 29 points. At this time the second OT was sudden-death. West scored on a rebound basket to win, and went onto win the State Championship. 


























1957- Galesburg 23- Rock Island 21 (Sectional)
Galesburg pulled off one of the all-time great upsets on this night when they went to Coach Thiel’s famous “open court” offense. The Streaks featured Bobby Hoffman, Albert and Elbert Kimbrough, Al Williams, Doug Mills, Jimmy Range, and Duane White. 


































1957- Collinsville 61- Galesburg 59 (Elite 8)
The Streaks battled back from a large deficit to nearly win. The foul disparity was huge, Galesburg was called for 23 and Collinsville only 7. Galesburg outscored Collinsville 50-34 from the field but lost the free throw line 27-9. The game finished and a brawl followed with fans and players in confrontation.




























1959- Galesburg 73- Herrin 69 (Elite 8)
Galesburg had been #1 in the State most of the year, and Herrin had been #2 in the State. This was a matchup fans wanted to see, and it did not disappoint. This team featured Jimmie Carr, Ralph Cannon, Bumpy Nixon, Dave Cox, Richard Nichols, Lincoln Nixon, and Otis Cowan. In this game, the Streaks were led by Dave Cox (21) and had 5 players in double figures.  The Streaks went onto finish 3rd in State.

































1960- Galesburg 77- DeKalb 71 (OT) (Super-Sectional)
The Streaks came by and Lincoln Nixon saved the day by hitting two clutch free throws in the last ten seconds to tie the game in regulation. Lincoln Nixon had 27 points and Ralph Cannon had 25 points. The Streaks were down 9 points going into the fourth quarter. 

































1964- Pekin 72- Galesburg 67 (Regular Season at Pekin)
In front of over 4,000 fans at Pekin, Galesburg lost a thriller. Davis and Harris scored 46 inside. In the heated matchup, after the game a skirmish broke out. Duncan Reid (then Pekin soph coach) stepped between Dawdy Hawkins and John Thiel. 


































1964- Galesburg 70- Quincy 63 (Sectional at Galesburg)
The two rivals met at Galesburg in the Sectional. Galesburg prevailed in front of a capacity crowd. The Streaks featured Rick Callahan, Frank Dexter, Marv Harris, Davey Lundtrom, Bernie Cowan, Larry Doyle, Mike McCreight, and Mike Davis.

































1964- Cobden 60- Galesburg 57 (Elite Eight)
The Streaks were upset by the Cobden Appleknockers. Playing in the University of Illinois Assembly Hall, it was an away game as all the neutral fans jumped on the Cobden bandwagon. The Streaks were 22-58 from the field. Galesburg led by 4 going into the fourth quarter but were outscored 20-13 in the fourth. 


































1966- Galesburg 78- Costa 66 (Regional Championship at Bushnell)
Costa featured great height and featured Larry Woods. Woods was an athletic 6’4” player. Galesburg’s key players were Terry Childers, Mike Drasites, Bob Jasperson, Dave Wood, Dale Kelley, Bruce LaViolette, and Barry Swanson. The Friars got in early foul trouble and did not have the depth to keep up with Galesburg. 



































1966- Galesburg 69- Springfield 65 (Supersectional)
Springfield featured two great big men- Bill Scheffler and Dave Robisch. Robisch went onto play in the NBA. Springfield could not stop Dale Kelley as he scored 37 points in the win.






























1966- Galesburg 73- Benton 70 (Elite 8)
Benton was ranked #1 in State, and featured Rich Yunkus. The Streaks were powered home by Dale Kelley’s 31 points. 






























1966- Galesburg 65- Belleville 64 (State Semi-Finals)
Belleville West was ranked #4 in the State, and featured high scorer Joe Wiley. Wiley had 32 and Dale Kelley poured in 37 points. Galesburg trailed 52-44 going into the fourth quarter, and outscored Belleville 21-12 in the fourth quarter. 






























1968- Galesburg 61- Springfield 60 (OT) (Supersectional)
The rivals squared off in the Supersectional. Galesburg featured the inside tandem of James Reinebach and Ruben Triplett, as well as Dave Wood, Leon Luckett, Fred Mims, Roland MacDougall, Lugene Finley, Steve Olson, and Zack Thiel. 





























1968- Galesburg 83- Effingham 52 (Elite Eight)
Effingham entered the game #1 in the State and undefeated. The Streaks left no doubt about who the best team was, in one of the most dominant State performances ever. Galesburg led 38-22 at half, and 61-33 after three. Triplett led the scoring with 25. 


































1969- Galesburg 44- Proviso East 40 (Regular Season at Galesburg)
The Streaks gave Jim Brewer and the Pirates their only defeat of the 1969 season. The Streaks featured a powerful inside game with James Reinebach and Ruben Triplett. Reinebach had 12 points and 15 rebounds. Only 10 players saw action in this game as neither team subbed. The Streask went with Reinebach, Triplett, John Tuszynski, Zack Thiel, and Mike Doyle. 

































1976- Galesburg 85- Richwoods 79 (OT) Regional Championship at Galesburg
The year before with basically the same players, Richwoods had beaten Galesburg by over 50 points. Both teams featured two future D1 players. Led by Mike Campbell and Scott Kelley, Galesburg pulled off the upset. The Streaks also included Mike Wilder, Eric Doss, Carl Finley, and Rance Berry. 


































1983- Galesburg 64- Quincy 54 (Regular Season at Quincy)
The Streaks ended Quincy’s 70 game home winning streak with this win. Coach Jerry Leggett used a triangle and two, guarding, Byron Thierry and Eric Johnson. Thierry finished with 11 points and Johnson had 17 despite the tactic. The game was close, but Galesburg applied full court pressure that gave the Streaks a nice run. Galesburg featured Thierry, Johnson, Rob Baughman, Mike Yeager, Darren Blackwell, Bill Patterson, and Mike Owens. 

































1983- Richwoods 67- Galesburg 66 (OT) Regional Championship at Galesburg
A very good Galesburg team lost a heart breaker at home. The Streaks featured Byron Thierry, Eric Johnson, Mike Owens, Mike Yeager, Tim Hambsch, Bill Patterson, Darrin Blackwell, and Rob Baughman. 


































1984- Galesburg 99- Morton 92 (4 OT’s) Regular Season at Galesburg
In a game that would not end, Galesburg prevailed. The Streaks featured Byron Thierry, Mike Owens, Bill Patterson, Tim Hambsch, and Rob Baughman. 


































1990- Galesburg 66- Rock Island 62 (Sectional)
Galesburg entered the Sectional game at Moline with an 11-14 record, and had lost twice to Rock Island in the regular season. Rock Island entered the game #1 ranked in the State. Galesburg featured Jason Shay, Elmer Dickerson, Sean Kane, John Watson, Todd Kyler, Chad Bern, Jeff Vanosdall, CJ Ramage. 


































1998- Galesburg 75- Moline 59 (Regular Season at Moline)
In 1997, Galesburg had lost to Moline three times as Moline went to State. Both teams returned their main players, while Galesburg added transfer Rod Thompson. In the first matchup, Galesburg broke open as Coach Miller set up numerous backdoors to counter Moline’s aggressive defense. 

































1998- Galesburg 65- Moline 59 (Regular Season at Galesburg)
In a much closer game, Galesburg prevailed. Galesburg featured Joey Range, Rod Thompson, Mike Tapper, Taylor Thiel, Steve Glasgow, Beau Shay, Patrick Hanlon. 


































1998- Galesburg 60- Moline 48 (Sectional at UTHS)
It’s hard to be a good team three times, but not if you are a great team. Before a capacity crowd (as all their games were), Galesburg broke open the game to win the Sectional championship.

































1998- Galesburg 68- Rockford Boylan 63 (Supersectional at Rockford)
In a dunkfest vs the Boylan zone defense, Galesburg won in a close game. Although the game was in Rockford, Galesburg fans assured it was not a true road game. Range and Thompson combined for 35 points. Galesburg led by ten at half and Boylan could not quite come back. 





























1998- Galesburg 66- Maine West 63 (State Semi-Finals)
In a great high school basketball game, Galesburg prevailed. Galesburg led after three quarters by 55-43. Range scored 29 and Steve Glasgow had 14 on 4-6 from threes, and 8 assists. Thompson had 16 points and 9 rebounds. 
































1998- Whitney Young 61- Galesburg 56 (State Championship)
In a game featuring numerous future D1 players and pro players, Galesburg was right there with a minute to go but things did not bounce right for the Streaks. Galesburg shot a sizzling 9 for 20 from three (Tapper 2-6, Thiel 4-6, Thompson 3-4). Glasgow had 9 assists.
