The following are the Illinois Boys/Girls Basketball AP rankings as of January 7.
Galesburg Silver Streaks girls basketball team is ranked #2 in 3A rankings. The Streaks are ranked behind Washington. Galesburg received 1 of the first place votes, and Washington received 4 of the first place votes.
Area girls teams receiving votes:
1A- A-Town
2A- Princeton, West Hancock, Riverdale, Mercer Co
3A- Washington, Galesburg, Morton, Dixon, Quincy ND, Sterling, Peoria ND, Metamora
4A- None
Area boys teams receiving votes:
1A- A-Town
2A- Quincy ND, Manual, West Hancock
3A- Metamora, East Peoria, Morton, Peoria
4A- Richwoods
** It should be noted that the loss of local newspapers has impacted the voting. At one time, there were 16 voters in the AP Rankings. This year in the girls polls there are 4 voters in 1A, 7 in 2A, 5 in 3A, and 7 in 4A. In the boys polls, there are 10-11 voters in each poll. It makes it kind of tough to cover the entire State.
** In 3A girls, Mattoon ranks 13th in the poll. Mattoon’s record according to MaxPreps is 1-13, which puts them at 495th in MaxPreps ranking. If this was not a clerical error by a voter, that voter should consider removing themselves from the panel.
The pollsters apparently have confused Rockford Christian and Rockford Christian Life. Christian is a good 2A team, worthy of recognition in the poll. Christian Life is a struggling 1A team (1 win) that plays some non-IHSA teams.
ReplyDeleteI think the polls are a wonderful way to shine light on high school basketball, but whoever is running the poll needs to figure out how to get more involvement. State polls that have only 4, 5, and 7 voters are questionable at best. The error you point out, and the error I mentioned about Mattoon serve to make the polls lose credibility.
