Yes, I think as high school coaches, there are things that can be learned watching NBA teams. This time of year, each HS coach is looking at their own teams and own style, and figuring out if they want to make some adjustments to their team.
Here are 10 things that a high school coaches can study in the conference finals. I am not suggesting a coach looks at all 10 of these things, but look at what areas relate to your team’s needs.
- What does OKC do to attack the zone? Does OKC rely on perimeter shooting? How do they fill the high post? What movements give the defense trouble?
- How do each of the teams use their stars- Brunson, Halliburton, Edwards, and Gilgeous-Alexanader? How do they create shots for them when they have the ball? When they are off the ball?
- How does OKC use Caruso defensively? At 6’5”, he has guarded point guards and posts. If they have him guard a post, how do they help him out?
- If you want to have your players learn how to apply ball pressure- study how Caruso, Dort, and Wallace of OKC guard the opposing point guards.
- Everybody want to run off rebounds and some off makes- how is OKC so effective running off steals? They are scoring 24.7ppg off turnovers. Obviously they create a lot of turnovers but also watch how they convert turnovers.
- Indiana has early offense where they get a lot of points in the first 10 seconds of a possession even if they don’t have a break. How do they get early shots?
- Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 35ppg vs T-Wolves during the season. How does Minnesota try to guard a great guard?
- Brunson averaged 29ppg vs Indiana in playoffs last year. How does Indiana guard a great guard?
