This is a nice side ball screen out of a spread 5 out alignment. The action is an action that a you see all the time in the NBA but also in colleges. And of course everything is copies, already this winter having an opportunity to watch some HS action, I have seen a couple HS’s running similar action.
I want to show some of the options, and also how you can create the action even if you do not run 5 Out. Obviously the teaching method to get players to read would be a lot of 2 on 2.
Secret in the Angle- The key to the NBA screen action is in the angle. The screener is coming at an angle from the middle of the floor. And the cutter is coming from outside to inside.
Refuse, Go Backdoor- With the floor spaced and the ball at the top, it is ideal for getting open on a basket cut.
Post Slips- The angle of the screen and cut means that if the post is going to show on the cut, the guard defender will be outside the post. That makes if very hard for the guard defender to get back to the middle to cover the slip.
Curl to Basket- If guard defender wants to follow over the screen, the guard can curl to the basket.
Catch and Go- Again because the cutter is headed toward the middle of the floor, when the cutter catches, their opportunities to just go on the dribble.
Use Horns to Get Into It- If a coach does not run 5 Out, they can use their offense to get into 5 Out alignment. Here it is using a Horn set.
We have added this action to our transition .. haven't gotten a lot out of it yet, mostly from a lack of understanding. Hope to get there!
