Strategy- 1999 Triangle Delay (vs Loyola)

Triangle Delay-
The basic concept of this delay is to have the three players at the top exchange and pass back and forth to each other.

This delay concept was good for us because we were putting three players in the “triangle” and three players who could all shoot free throws when the other team decided to foul. Jaque Howard (81%), Sarah Larson (78%), Megan Pacheco (75%)

Also, it was effective because the three players in the delay were not all guards. As a result, the defenders were less likely to want to switch and if they did, it would mean that a post defender might be on a guard.

Another advantage of this delay system is whether the opponent plays man to man or goes into some trapping defenses- we are in a good alignment. We would want to go 2-1-2 vs 1-3-1 trapping defense.

1= Jaque Howard (Point Guard)

2= Michelle Flaar (Shooting Guard)

3= Megan Pacheco (Small Forward)

4= Jenny Zolper (Power Forward)

5= Sarah Larson (Post)

1999 Loyola Game at State-
In 1999, we played the two-time defending State Champions, Loyola. After trailing most of the game. We took a two point lead with 1:48 to go. They tied the game at 1:16 with two free throws. We ran the triangle delay game for the last 1:16 of the game, and scored at the buzzer.

1999 Lincoln Game at State-
Galesburg got the ball with the score tied and 1:01 to go. We ran this Triangle Delay until we attacked the basket and were fouled with 5 seconds to go.

Triangle Screen Exchange-
#3 screens down for #5 to pop out to the other guard spot. #5 has the freedom to go on either side of the screen. When #5 comes up, they want to turn so they are not going away from the ball.

Pass and Screen Down-
On reverse pass, #1 then goes to screen for #3 to pop up. #1 always has the option of starting to screen down but can fake and pop back out.

Overplay Reaction-
If the guard to guard pass is denied, then #1 dribbles at #3. #3 leaves and #5 pops up to replace #1.

Dribble Reverse Pass
- After #1 cleared with dribble, they pass back to #5 filling the other guard spot.

Overplay- Pass Down Option-
The guard to guard pass is denied. #1 can choose to pass down to #2 popping up. #1 then cuts to the basket.

Overplay- Pass Down Option-
#5 then fills in. We reset the Triangle.

Backdoor Option- We never used this, but many people who run this, do use this backdoor option. Pass down, clear out the post, flash weakside post and backdoor cut. We did not want to invest the time in developing this. We liked how we had two simple reactions to the guard to guard overplay- dribble at or pass down.
