Lots of players think they are physical but it turns out they really either don’t like contact or don’t understand the level of physicalness that is needed in certain situations.
Whether it is posting up or defending in the post, or if it is blocking out to rebound, players need to be willing to make contact. Obviously they need to learn to make the contact in such away that they don’t get called for a foul.
This rebounding drill is one that many of you have probably done before, but it with three wrinkles that are valuable in teaching the defenders to be physical when they block out.
Basic Drill- Three defenders are rotating in the lane, when the shot goes up, the offensive players are going to the basket to rebound, and the defense must make contact and block out.
Wrinkles-
1- The drill is set up so the shooter is at one wing and the offense is on the weakside. Often coaches set up rebounding drills with the shooter at the top of the key area. Most shots are going to be taken on one side or the other, so defenders need to work on finding the offensive players as weakside defenders.
2- The offensive players are instructed to just go hard one direction. There is no faking and changing direction. We want the defense to move to cut them off and block them out, but our emphasis in the drill is have contact occur.
3- The most important part of drill is that the offensive rebounders have football hand dummies. So the defensive player blocking out is going to smack into the dummy. Using the dummy with the offensive player really encourages the defense to be very physical and to make contact.
