WB6 Update- Bradley Longcor III- Moving Up

Bradley Longcor III moves up Quincy all-time scoring list, and moves up the list of leading scorers at the 8 schools of the WB6. Presently at 1,773 career points, he has the 7th highest total of any players at the 8 schools.

Longcor has 6 regular season games left, and the possibility of as many as 7 tourney games for the highly ranked Blue Devils, so he may keep moving on up the list.

Old School Coaches- Approach to Post Season

This Week’s Question

Basketball seasons are in process of winding down, and heading into the post season. What were some of the things you did in preparation or approach to the post season? Were there adjustments you made as you went into the post season?

Reflections- Green and Gold- Laugh, Cry, and Love

We finally got to see the film “Green and Gold.” I don’t remember ever being so anxious to see a film. I felt like my brother, Mark when our family had to rush home so Mark could watch some group called the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show.

The age old vaudeville question is, “Will it play in Peoria?” We went to a Sunday matinee at Peoria’s Grand Prairie Theater. Green and Gold was indeed great in Peoria.

Players Playbook- Winning Isn't Everyone's Priority

Each player has their own unique set of goals. Some players may have individual goals that are very important to them, as well as team goals.

An individual player's goals can be shaped by their coaches, their teammates, and by their parents. Goals are often the source of inspiration and drive for an athlete. Obviously the more the player "owns their goals," the better. Having a goal that is "what dad wants," is seldom productive or healthy for an athlete.

Classic- 1966 Galesburg vs Costa

Biggest Game in Galesburg Basketball History

If Galesburg fans were asked to name the “greatest game in Galesburg history,” they probably would have a whole lot of games

to choose from. 1956 Rockford West in Super, 1965 Pekin at Galesburg, 1966 Springfield, 1969 Proviso East at Galesburg, 1976 Richwoods at Galesburg, and 1998 Whitney Young. And you could even add in girls games with 1995 Quincy in Sectional, 1996 vs Freeport, 1997 vs Taylorville, and 1999 vs Loyola.

My point is that there have been a lot of “great” games in Galesburg basketball history, but I believe the “biggest” game in the City of Galesburg history took place in 1966 when Galesburg HS played Costa HS for the Regional championship. Both teams from the same town, and both teams good enough to make a real splash in the State Tournament.

WB6 Update- Sterling’s Musgrove Fieldhouse- Wow

When I coached, Musgrove FH was not my favorite place to play. In the large fieldhouse, the baskets were far from any walls and we never seemed to shoot well. The real problem was that Sterling’s teams were always well coached and their players always played hard.

As a fan, Musgrove FH is one of my favorite places to watch a game. The gym is impressive, and it is like attending a museum in their lobby area. I have gone to watch lots of college and high school games, and Sterling’s displays are second to nobody. Any administrator who is thinking about remodeling or updating their gym should go to Sterling for ideas.

X/O’s- 3 Man Delay

Three Guards Delay-
Pass guard to guard, then cut diagonally. The third guard is cutting up. If the defense stays to help, the guard is wide open for reverse. If #3’s defender does not stay to help, the cutter may be open inside.

Fast Break with David Arsenault Sr

For most of my years coaching girls basketball at Galesburg HS, we were an uptempo team that looked to fastbreak and to pressure full-court. The ultimate in uptempo basketball has been Grinnell College and Coach David Arsenault Sr. I have been intrigued with the Grinnell System for decades. While I was into uptempo, I hesitated to make the plunge into the "System." I finally instituted a version of the Grinnell System for about 5 season starting in 2009.

In my 50 years of coaching high school basketball, I never found any group more willing to share ideas and answer questions than the coaches working the "System." Perhaps it was in part because if you were running the "System," you had to stick together because many thought you were crazy and what you were doing was not sound.

Quiz- Streaks & Their Colleges

Galesburg High School has a rich history of girls and boys basketball. There have been many great players in Streaks history. This quiz looks at some of the Streaks greats who went onto play D1 basketball. Realize this is not intended to be a complete list, so there are players missing.

In today’s dollar, Galesburg basketball players have earned approximately $7,000,000 in D1 scholarships. When you add scholarships to D2 schools and jucos, the amount becomes even more.

I will list a Silver Streak player, your job is to list what D1 school they attended to play basketball. If they attended a juco first, still name the D1 school. If they attended multiple D1 schools, list the first they attended.

Please share your scores.
