Isaiah McDuffie of the Green Bay Packers was elected by his teammates as a team captain. He plays linebacker and averages only 16 snaps per game. When the team want to show rookies how to practice, they have a video of McDuffie at practice. Yes, a player can be important to culture even if they are not playing lots of minutes.
US Women’s Basketball Team has been selected for training camp. It includes 18 players- including Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese. Don’t get excited, the team does not include players like Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson, Sabrina Ionescu, and Napheese Collier- all of these players will be on the next Olympic team. The 18 for the training camp are players invited to workout and be evaluated. There is a good chance that only a handful of them will be on the actual Olympic team.
Raining Threes- Dunlap girls team despite starting out 1-3 had a game in which they made 17 threes. The Eagles have two sophomores guards that have drawn D1 interest.
Waukee NW lost a close game to Washington at Washington. Hats off to both schools for scheduling this game. Such games bring more eyes to HS girls basketball. The Waukee schools are just west of Des Moines, are very good in boys and girls basketball.
First Pick- Dallas Wings get the first pick of the coming draft. The new pick will be paired with last year’s pick- Paige Bueckers. In an interesting twist, some prognosticators have Paige’s girl friend, Azzi Fudd as possible the #1 to #4 pick. Will Dallas feel a pressure to please Paige?
Nicole Jokic has had 10 triple doubles in his first 17 games of the season.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander- is averaging over 30ppg despite not playing in most fourth quarters. In the Thunders first 19 games (18-1), SGA hs only played in the fourth quarter 8 times.
OKC Thunder- Are the Thunder heading for being the all-time best regular season NBA team? With their 19-1 start, OKC projects to finish the season at 77-5. And did I mention that they just got their second best player back- he missed the first 18 games of the season.

Quincy girls basketball has sent out a memo to AD’s and coaches in the Western Big Six Conference that FS girls games will be 4 x 8 minute running clocks with the clock stopping in normal fashion in the last two minutes of each quarter. This decision was made by Quincy because of a shortage of players. It should be noted that Quincy High School has 1,743 students enrolled in the high school.
Newspapers Coverage is Dead- Not a lot of high school coaches and AD’s seem to understand that newspapers really don’t cover hs sports anymore. The past two weeks, I decided to conduct research about how many coaches and AD’s post scores. I followed 25 area HS’s and college’s. Of the 25 teams—
7 girls teams posted scores on Facebook or Twitter
3 boys teams posted scores on Facebook or Twitter
3 Athletic Directors posted results about the teams
15 teams had no social media presence
Kim Mulkey at LSU has set an NCAA record. Her team has scored over 100 points in 8 straight games for an NCAA record. Before you get too excited, LSU’s opponents in those 8 games- Washington St, Marist, Alcorn St, Tulane, Charlotte, Ga Southern, Houston Christian, and SE Louisiana. And 2 of the 8 games were actually on the road.
