Sonia Citron is a 6’1” rookie guard for the Washington Mystics. She played college basketball at Notre Dame, and was the #3 pick in the WNBA 2025 draft. She is averaging 14.1ppg, 5.0rpg, 2.0apg, 45 FG%, 37% 3’s, 89% FT. She was selected to the 2025 All-Star game.
I had the opportunity to listen to her in a podcast interview with Sue Bird on “Bird’s Eye View. She shared things that have helped her and have helped other WNBA players become successful.
1- Go To Move- Know your go to spots and “go to move.” Study film and/or reflect on your games to learn what your best or favorite moves are.
2- Counter To Your Go To- Work to refine your “go to move,” and work to develop a counter to your “go to move.”
3- Take “Daily Vitamins”- The “Daily Vitamins” are small, focused efforts geared toward self-improvement. It doesn’t have to be hours, it can just be 10-15 minutes per day. It doesn’t have to even involve sweating. It can be watching film with a specific purpose, it can be repeating a move, or it can be working on a specific finish. Whatever it is- if you do this daily, it will all add up. Repetition, repetition, repetition.
4- Become More Physical- Always work to get physically stronger. Learn to handle physical.
5- Become Smarter- The best pros in the WNBA have high basketball IQ’s. They work to analyze their game. You need to learn if an opponent does something, what your counter as an individual and as a team should be.
6- Up Your Communication- Best pros are highly connected with their communication. It can be in a game or in a practice, actively trying to help their teammates and become more connected.
7- Start With Humility- There is so much to learn and so much chance for growth.
8- Process Is The Goal- The best individual goal is not about outcomes, it is about being locked into the process of improvement.
At the end of the interview, Sue Bird commented about the level of humility Citron showed and how much that will translate into success going forward.
