Jessica Lieber Signs with UIS

Jessica Lieber signed to play golf at University of Illinois- Springfield.

Jessica will join another Streaks' alum, Sara Baker at UIS. Sara will be a senior on the volleyball team next year.

The following is from the Register-Mail by Matt Wheaton.

Jessica Lieber has been playing golf only since her freshman year at Galesburg High School.
However, the GHS senior has worked countless hours at improving her game and it paid off Thursday when she signed a national letter of intent to play golf at the University of Illinois — Springfield, an NCAA Division II school.
"I really like the school itself and I love the golf program," said Lieber, who shoots an 18-hole average of 75 and 9-hole average of 38. "They just got a new coach last year, so they are building up the program. I'm excited to play with the incoming recruits."
Lieber, who made four straight appearances at the IHSA Class AA state girls golf tournament, joins a UIS team that finished eighth at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship in the 2011-12 season.

Research on Coaching Aggression

New Research Shows Effects of Verbally Aggressive Conduct in Coaching

April 12, 2013, 11:32 am
To what extent can coaches use negative tactics to motivate athletes? And what impact does that approach have on coaches’ credibility?

Those questions, which have taken on new meaning in the aftermath of the Mike Rice firing at Rutgers University, are the subject of research to be published this summer in the International Journal of Sport Communication.

The main takeaway: Verbally aggressive language doesn’t work, even in an environment where athletes have been conditioned to expect it, the researchers found.

Teacher's Retirement Letter

The following was published in the Washington Post. It is not sports or basketball, but it is an interesting letter from a teacher who has decided to retire from teaching out of frustration with educational reforms.....

Increasingly teachers are speaking out against school reforms that they believe are demeaning their profession, and some are simply quitting because they have had enough.
Here is one resignation letter from a veteran teacher, Gerald J. Conti, a social studies teacher at Westhill High School in Syracuse, N.Y.:
Mr. Casey Barduhn, Superintendent
Westhill Central School District
400 Walberta Park Road
Syracuse, New York 13219
Dear Mr. Barduhn and Board of Education Members:
It is with the deepest regret that I must retire at the close of this school year, ending my more than twenty-seven years of service at Westhill on June 30, under the provisions of the 2012-15 contract. I assume that I will be eligible for any local or state incentives that may be offered prior to my date of actual retirement and I trust that I may return to the high school at some point as a substitute teacher.

Men's Team Told No to Going to Women's Game

Louisville had intended to fly the men's team to New Orleans to support the women's team. The NCAA stepped in and said no....

It’s a big week for Louisville basketball, with both the men and women’s teams in the NCAA title game. The men’s team just claimed the championship title last night, but they have been told by the NCAA that the men’s team cannot fly to New Orleans to watch the women chase the same title.

Tweets

There's a fine line b/w winning & losing. The edge goes to the team that plays w/ great energy, not what the game plan is.

Hey players, either your coach wants you to shoot when you're open or your opponent's coach does... which is it?

“Persistence makes the impossible possible, the possible likely, and the likely definite.”

Successful teams have this mantra as part of their everyday existence: "it can never be about me". Teams win thru joint efforts.

Kevin Ware- Inspiring

Kevin Ware suffered the horrible broken leg. How he has handled this has been an inspiration to his teammates and to the public. First when he was on the floor in pain, he over and over told his teammates, "Just win the game." Team first!!

This is a message he tweeted after the surgery...

Minor setback, for a major comeback.

Refs Going After a Coach

Coaches tend to become paranoid. Sometimes when you see a particular crew coming out for a game, you feel a disappointment.

Refs want a clean slate when they start a game- they don't want the coach mad about a call or calls from a game a month ago. Coaches and players want the same from refs- they want the game to start with a clean slate. When I first started coaching, most refs would refuse to work more than 3 games during an entire season with a particular team- the feeling was when you worked more games you were creating too much history.

Peyton Manning's Lesson for Basketball

This is article compares the simplicity of the "Manning passing game" with the simplicity of the ball screen offense. The comparison could be made to a lot of styles in sports. The philosophy is the Bob Knight philosophy- do a few things really well vs. the Dean Smith philosophy try to do a lot to be able to surprise the opponent. This could be true also of the philosophy of Syracuse- we are only going to play 2-3 zone, but we are going to play it really well.

Peyton Manning is often described as a wizard, and genius, and all that may be true. But as Grantland’s Chris Brown writes, he didn’t earn that reputation by mastering complex plays.
His story on Manning and the Bronco offense that No. 18 imported from his time with the Colts got me thinking about, what else, basketball, and specifically about the effecitiveness of the spread pick-and-roll offense.
