Coaches’ Corner: Ghost into Clear Out

Normally when we talk about running a clear out, you think of clearing a side out for the player to go one on one. This simple action is designed to create space in the middle of the floor. You will look at it and think it is too simple to really work, but this year I have seen it used effectively 2-3 times per game for a layup for #3 or a wide open three on a kick.

Diagram 1- #1 passes and then is going to ghost screen for #3. You will need to experiment and see what works best for you. It might be that you have #1 run a ghost screen, and just tap #3’s defender on the hip going by. Or you may find you want to cut #1 thru and just get out of the way. If #1 is a good shooter, you may get an open shot for them off of the ghost.

Diagram 2- #3 does not hesitate but goes hard with the dribble. The defense may be confused by the ghost screen or may stay strong, but it is VERY difficult to keep guarding when #3 has so much space and is going to go hard for the other side of the basket.

Obviously you need to put your best driver at the #3 spot, and good shooters in the #4 and #2 spots. If you need to hide someone, you may move the non-shooter over to #3’s corner and just have one player on the right side of the floor.
