Coaches’ Corner- Running Flex into 4 Different Actions

Many coaches run some kind of flex action. Some coaches get into the action in a quick and simple way, and others run some false action to get into it.

I am going to show you one way to get into flex that was copied from Carthage, but then show 4 different possible actions after the initial flex action.

Carthage Flex Action

Figure 1- The play can be run either way, but usually we ran it to the right side. #2 screens down to pop #4 to the perimeter. The play can actually start if #2 can post up a guard or if #4’s defender doesn’t come out to away the shot.

Figure 2- As #4 is receiving the ball, #5 is coming up off a stagger by #3 and #1. When we had a #4 or #5 coming off the stagger who could shoot, it was a great way to get an open look. My experience showed that usually the defenders on #1 were the other team’s best on the ball defenders but were usually not great defending actions and switching.

Figure 3- #5 catches and quickly reverses the ball to #1.

Figure 4- The flex action begins, with #4 cutting off #2, and #5 screening down.

Figure 5- Option 1- Continuous Flex

Figure 6- Option 2- Dribble into High Low

Figure 7- Option 3- Reverse into European Ball Screen

Figure 8- Option 4- Reverse into a Zoom Action
