My Scout Report- Gyms, Wins, Crowds, & Knox

It has been another fun couple weeks watching basketball. There are so many good things to see about the game from high school to college to the pros.

Women’s Pro Attendance Record- The Unrivaled League took their league on the road for games in Philadelphia on Jan. 30. They set an attendance record of 21,490. This was also a record for the arena where the ‘76er’s play! Now we can only hope that the WNBA owners and players can figure out things so the momentum isn’t stopped.

Allen Fieldhouse- This past Saturday it was a great game at Allen FH between KU and BYU. The projected top two NBA draft picks were on display (both freshmen), and they didn’t disappoint. I had an opportunity to go to a KU game at Allen FH, it is without a doubt one of THE top sports experiences to see a game at Allen FH.

Moline & Quincy Win’s Scoreboard- Both Quincy and Moline have running scoreboards of the basketball programs win totals. The scoreboard for Quincy boys is in the gym they play. Moline has a scoreboard with the boys total and another one for the girls total. Canton does the same thing in Alice Ingersoll.

Galesburg boys and girls are at the top of the state in win totals. Wouldn’t it be cool if Galesburg posted the scoreboards with the win totals of the girls and boys programs, and then just kept adding to the total as they go?

Iowa FT Record- Iowa’s record for most consecutive ft’s made is 34 by Chris Street and Jason Bohannon. Chris was tragically killed in an auto accident as a student / athlete at Iowa. When Bohannon had a chance to break the record, he intentionally missed what would have been ft #35.

Tavion Banks presently sits at 30 in a row, going into today’s game vs. Oregon. The question on Hawkeye fans and basketball fans- should Banks intentionally miss to keep Street’s record in the scorebook?

Illustrious- If you are a big time HS basketball fan, or you have a big time HS basketball fan in the family- you need to get this book. It isn’t just good, it is great with 100’s of Illinois gyms chronicled with both pictures and stories.

Jay Redfern and Randy Oberembt- If you have not listened to it yet, you need to listen to Redfern’s interview with former Knox football coach, Randy Oberembt. They talk about new Cleveland Browns coach, Todd Monken, Harley Knosher, and more…

Speaking of Knox- Bria Medina just set the Knox Women’s Basketball All-Time Scoring Record at 1,373. It is even more impressive when you think that Knox plays a limited schedule and Medina is only a junior. It would appear that she is headed for 2,000 points before she is done.

Bettendorf Women’s Basketball Senior Salutes- Hats off to Bettendorf for using social media to honor their seniors. The posts were short but to the point, and a great way to honor their seniors.

Sterling Shines Light on Students/Athletes-  Sterling Athletic Program goes the extra mile to shed light on their students and athletes. I have included a post where they are honoring students and athletes for excellence- it is a great idea to have these awards and to use social media to recognize them.

Sterling AD Shares Scores- It would be great if every athletic department took the time to usual Twitter, Facebook, and other social media to tell you about games coming up, and then giving scores.

Sterling Class Act- This past Friday, Sterling boys basketball hosted Quincy in a “coaches’ vs cancer” game. Quincy coach Tom Lepper died of cancer in November of 2024. At the game, Sterling honored Tom’s son, Brennan. Brennan is a freshman on the varsity and he hit the shot to send the game into OT.

Scoreboard Operators- As I have gone to games in different gyms, it is obvious that the scoreboard operators can be distracting if they are too fast or too slow. The perfect timing is to allow the fan to watch the play, then glance up at the scoreboard, and see the score added to the total. If the operator does it too fast, as a fan you look up and keep looking because you are not sure it is up yet. If it is put up too slow, the fan has to keep looking and waiting. The PERFECT timing allow you to see the basket, see the score added, and get back to the game.
