Streaks Basketball Alums: Jaque Howard Gohlinghorst 2000

What was your favorite class, teacher?

Science with Mr. Steve Peachey.  He is the best!

What are a few of your favorite memories from GHS?

There are so many great memories from my high school basketball days but these are my top picks.
  • Beating Moline in overtime for the sectional championship.  To this day, I still do not know how we pulled that game off in regulation!
  • Beating Loyola at the buzzer in the Elite 8 game after we were beaten in the Elite 8 game the year before by them!
  • Coming back from being down 17 at half against Mendota and winning at the buzzer for the Grand Championship at the State Farm tournament in Bloomington.
  • Finishing 2nd in state
  • Being fortunate to finish our season all four years at the state tournament.

What did you do right after high school?

After high school, I went to SIUE in Edwardsville on a basketball scholarship.  The funny thing is I ended up playing college ball with Ruth Kipping and Heather Hillebrenner from Quincy who were big rivals of ours in high school.  I received my bachelors degree in Kinesiology from SIUE as well.

Where and what did you do for a career?

This is the start of my 19th year teaching PE at Galesburg District 205.  I have taught different age groups for PE but I am currently teaching 7th & 8th graders and I love it.

What are you up to these days?

My husband, Matt Gohlinghorst, and I live in Galesburg and have two boys.  Our oldest son, Clay, is 13 and attends Galesburg Jr/Sr High School where I teach.  Our youngest son, Jack, is 6 years old and he attends Costa Catholic Academy in town.   Boths boys keep us busy because they are involved in a variety of sports/activities such as basketball, soccer, golf, 4H.

I also coach my boys in their different sports.  Last year, I started a golf program at Costa Catholic Academy and we just finished our 2nd season.  Soccer season is just starting so I am coaching his YMCA soccer team.  If I am not following our boys around at their sports then you can find me at the golf course.  Golf is definitely my happy place :)

What advice would you have for today's Silver Streak athletes?

Maintain a positive attitude and develop a good work ethic!  These two things will benefit you in sports but also in life!
