I have put together a collection of some of the pictures from the 1960 GHS Reflector. I have focused on pictures associated with the “new school,” as well as pictures of the extensive number of activities and classes available to GHS students in 1960.
I am sure as you look at these pictures, they may bring back memories of the 1960’s and 1970’s at GHS, and it also may produce questions. Here are some questions and comments I have after looking at the pictures…
I would love for you to share if you have some answers to my questions, and share your own comments and questions.
1- Looking at the aerial photo of GHS and the area- does anyone know what years things like Hinchliff-Pearson, McDonald’s on Henderson St, the old Casa Sierra, and other businesses on North Henderson Street were built?
2- It is mentioned that the first event at the GHS Auditorium was a Makalia Jackson concert. Does anyone remember that?
3- Three huge choirs, a large band, an orchestra, and majorettes- were any students at GHS not involved in bands or choir?
4- What was the Girls Service League, and what kinds of things did they do?
5- What was the Boys Forum, and what kinds of things did they do?
6- The yearbook states that, “Good behavior allowed the reinstatement of the senior alley.” What was the “senior alley?”
7- Before the learning center was added on, the library was up on the second floor. What do you remember about the library?
8- GHS offered Spanish, Latin, German, and French. That is so impressive, how many languages are offered today?
9- The GHS Reflectavue was a big time event. Did you participate, what did you do, and what are some of the best performances you remember?
10- At the old GHS, they had an extensive IM program- tennis, archery, swimming, softball, basketball, and more. What IM programs did GHS offer in the ‘60’s? When did they quit offering IM’s?
11- Opponents complained about how dark the old Steele Gym was. When I asked Jimmie Carr what he remembered about the new gym on Fremont St when he first saw it, his comment was- “It was so bright.” What are some of your memories of the new gym on Fremont St? Do you remember the divider for PE classes?
12- The last picture is a picture of a cheerleader in front of a huge crowd at the Super-Sectional game vs Freeport. Did you go to the game? If you did, what do you remember?
13- A pictures says that in 1959-60 that 75% of students took a bus to GHS. If you went to school in the ‘60’s- how did you get to school?
