1959 was one of the most exciting years in Galesburg basketball history. The Streaks were ranked #1 in the State, all but one week of the season. They lost in January at Pekin and dropped to #2 just for one week.
The matchup everyone anticipated happened in the Elite 8- #1 Galesburg vs. #2 Herrin. Galesburg won it, but turned around the next day and was upset by West Aurora. The Streaks went onto finish 3rd in State.
When Streaks fans debate the greatest team of all time, and what team came closest to winning State- the ‘59 Streaks are included in the debate.
