The 1957 Galesburg Silver Streaks upset #6 Rock Island and Don Nelson in the Sectional in a famous “slow-down game.” The Streaks lost in the Elite 8 matchup vs. Collinsville. A look at the box score shows that Galesburg outscored Collinsville from the field 50-34 but Collinsville shot 37 free throws and Galesburg shot 12. The fouls were 23 on Galesburg and 7 on Collinsville.
“Old-timers” in Galesburg have always speculated that some of the issues might have been connected to Galesburg starting 4 African-American players. When the final horn went off, a near riot or riot broke out between the fans of the two schools.
