This Week in Galesburg History (June 8, 2026)

“This Week in Galesburg History,” there were some different Major League Baseball teams, the Ford Pinto was selling cheap, and UN troops were fighting in Korea.

This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 25 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?

“This Week in Galesburg History” appears every Monday morning on the WGIL website and Massey Basketball Blog.

100 Years Ago- 1926

Nothing beats a good quiz- here is one for you. Can you name the nicknames of all the American League and National League teams in 1926?

A.L.- New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Washington, St. Louis, and Houston?

N.L.- Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago, St.Louis, Brooklyn, New York, Boston, Philadelphia.

And if you can answer all of those questions- where do all of these teams play today?

Answers at the end of this post!!!

75 Years Ago- 1951
We had just gotten done with World War II, and then were involved in Korea. The headline points out that it was a military action taken by the United Nations.

The popular show of later years, MASH was based on life of a medical unit in the Korean War.

50 Years Ago- 1976
Ford Motors came out with a real economy car in the Pinto. Louis Lakis Ford was advertising that you could get a Ford Pinto for as low as $3248. Today it may cost more for auto insurance.

Sadly, the Pinto had controversy, the fuel tank was located behind the rear axle. It was close to the rear bumper that resulted in tragedies when the car was rear ended. The car was involved in many lawsuits.

25 Years Ago- 2001

If you are like me, today I don’t even know what channels I get and I don’t get. In 2001, it seemed like we were getting “so many channels.” Here was the TV guide in the newspaper that had all the channels available on the basic cable package.

10 Years Ago- 2016

For a century, little boys have dreamed of making it to Major League Baseball. Matt Wheaton interviewed a Galesburg boy who was fulfilling the dream of making the “big leagues.”

Zach Ricketts had the dream of becoming a major league groundskeeper, and he was climbing the ladder.
