As coaches part of our job is to promote our team and our players. We need to do what we can to shine some light on our team.
In the “old days”, the local newspapers cover area teams. Parents, players, and fans could read articles about the games, read quotes from the coach and players about the game, and also there would be pictures of the players. The newspaper’s coverage of high school sports was part of the reason high school sports were a big deal to parents, players, and fans.
Today local newspapers don’t have 4-5 reporters ready to take scores, cover games, and write articles.
It is up to the coaches to give athletes attention. The best way for coaches to get info out is to use social media. In the sports world- X and Facebook will reach the most fans and parents.
I know some coaches are going to say, “I have enough to do, I don’t have time to be my team’s SID. My job is to coach not to be a publicist.”
The coach who feels that way does not get it. Getting publicity out about your team has ALWAYS been part of a coach’s job. In the “old days” it might have meant typing game results and taking them to the newspaper, calling 3 newspapers with results, or taping up signs around schools about the next game. Today the coach just needs to get on social media and post the info.
Coaches need to reach three audiences:
1- The players (they want to see the scores/times and their pictures).
2- The parents (they want to share the results and pictures with friends/family.)
3- The fans (it keeps them engaged)
Coaches need to share the following info:
1- Results of game/meets with stats/times of individuals
2- Pictures of athletes
3- Info about next games
We can all learn things from other sports. Here are some great things that LaSalle-Peru Girls Track is doing to shine light on their athletes.
