Today’s Streaks Alumni Profile features Shayli Florine from GHS Class of 2016.

Shayli had an extraordinary career in basketball. She was a dominate post player for the Streaks and then went onto have a wonderful career at McKendree University at Lebanon, IL.

She had a fantastic work ethic that made her great to coach. Shayli had an attitude that made her a great teammate and leader.

After GHS, Shayli used her college and post-grad education to allow her to become a leader at the Michigan State University. Her ambition and drive are inspirational.

Activities/Sports at GHS

Volleyball and basketball all four years, and track my senior year

Favorite teachers/classes

While math wasn’t my favorite, I absolutely loved Mrs. Kniker. She was so kind, funny and supportive even when I was very much struggling through AP calculus. Of course, you can’t forget Honors American Studies with Mr. Hickey and Mrs. Qualls - one of my favorite classes ever.

Favorite memories from GHS and growing up in Galesburg

I will always say that playing basketball on Thursday nights in the WB6 is one of my fondest memories from growing up. Team dinners and Christmas tournaments are also some of favorite memories.

Where have you gone to continue your studies

After graduating from GHS, I went to Mckendree University in Lebanon, IL where I played Division 2 basketball for four years and earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a focus in Sport Management. After that, I went to the University of Iowa and got a Master’s Degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs

What are you up to these days?

I’ve been in Michigan for 3 years now, and recently hit two years working in the Office for Civil Rights and Title IX at Michigan State University. I really care about the work that I do and am grateful to feel like I get to make a difference.

I live with my fiancé, Brandon, who I met shortly after moving to Michigan, and we love going to the theater to see plays and musicals. I coach club basketball in the spring, play recreational volleyball when I can, and have a great group of friends in Lansing that I love spending time with.

Advice to students/athletes at GHS

Try everything! Play all the sports you want to play, join all the clubs you’re interested in, make new friends, and be willing to put yourself out there. So much of who I am today is a credit to the sports and activities I got involved in when I was younger. Enjoy every moment, because it will fly by!
