Coaches’ Corner: 12 Offensive Ideas vs Switching MM Defense

Switching Man to Man defense can be tough to attack. Bob Anderson (Williamsfield) and Evan Massey (Galesburg) share some ideas for attacking when the defense is switching.

Bob Anderson- Williamsfield

Screen Away with Slip

Fade Screen with Slip

Give and Go Cut

Pass to the Top- Slip Screen Away

Evan Massey- Galesburg

Back Screen with Slip

Diagram #1- Start the ball to one side, and reverse it to the wing cutting thru.

Diagram #2- #4 cuts hard toward the ball but to be a screener. As soon as #4 makes contact, #4 slips right to the basket. It will not be unusual for X4’s defender to hesitate on the switch and leave 5 open on the lob.

Ghost Screen & Go

Diagram #1- #3 goes to set a ball screen but does not screen. It helps if #3 just taps X1 on the hip, this minor contact sells the idea of a screen.

Diagram #2- While #3 may be open for the shot, often their defender will be out of position so a catch and drive is a quick option.

Fake Hand Off

Diagram #1- #1 goes to give a dribble handoff. #2 wants to come high and wide to try to pull their defender out of position on the switch.

Diagram #2- #1 wants to hesitate then go.

Post Screens Away on Shooter with Confusion

Diagram #1- #2 (shooter) swings baseline off #3 to create some confusion- either X3 or X5 may decide to switch this cut.

#5 will screen away for #3 (shooter) to cut high. If they are slow to switch, #3 will have nice 12 footer. #5 will seal X3 (hopefully smaller defender) to come back for a post up.

Slip for Post Up

Diagram #1- #2 clears out. #4 will back screen for #1 to go to the basket.

Diagram #2- The ball is reversed to #1 popping out. (Note that vs switching defense #1 will be guarded by X4. It may be that a backdoor can be set up for #1 or #1 will just want to catch, rip and drive.) #3 starts toward #2 to screen but slips to go across to post up. If you have a big guard, this is a great play.

Flex with Slip

As #5 goes down to screen, they will simply slip to the basket.

1-3-1 Alignment- High Post Pin and Post

When #1 passes to the wing, #5 will step out and just touch X1 and immediately leave to go to the post.

2-1-2 Alignment- Seal for Lob

#2 cuts off #5. #5 seals and rolls to basket for lob.
