This week the athletes weigh in on winter sports, favorite restaurants, coach’s quotes, and great teammates.

Anthony Makwala

Senior, Galesburg

Wrestling, Soccer

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

I would like to do hockey it sounds really fun and has similarities to sports that I already enjoy.

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

I would use the $25 gift card to go eat out at Pho Lover. Especially with the weather being as it is, that sounds amazing.

Best quote or advice from your winter coach?

The best quote/ advice my winter coach gives me is, “In the moment of competition you don’t rise to the level of your expectations, But you fall to the work and practice you have put in”. I like this quote a lot because it keeps me pushin every practice every rep no matter how hard or boring it may get. The repetition becomes worth it.

What makes a great teammate?

I have had many great teammates. They all had the same characteristics they wanted me to succeed almost more than themselves. The one that was above them all, pushed me outside of sports and was there in moments of mental walls and nervousness.  They always celebrated the wins and the losses making light of the situation, then reinforcing it almost immediately with “you can do better”. Many moments he saw more in me than I saw of myself, teammates like that are valuable.

Taylor Herchenroder

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

Probably ski racing because going that fast looks fun.

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

I would go to Java.

Best quote or advice from your winter coach?

Be a fist rather than a hand. If you use the fist as a punch it will hurt way more than a slap. A punch is also together while a slap isn’t.

What makes a great teammate?

A great teammate is someone who pushes you to be your best. They are funny but know when to be serious and they are kind and caring.

Amyah Pruitt

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

I would wanna try hockey because it seems really fun and is entertaining

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

I love Masa Sushi & Hibachi

Best quote or advice from your winter coach?

Do not let one match define you.

What makes a great teammate?

What makes a great teammate is someone who is going to push you no matter what and someone who is going to help you succeed and get better

Olivia Hanlon

Sophomore, Denver East

Basketball

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

I would pick skiing because I love to ski and I think it would be really fun to get better at it.

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

Innkeepers, I have always had good memories with my cousins there and the food is good!

Best quote or advice from your winter coach?

Trust yourself.

What makes a great teammate?

A great teammate encourages, works hard, is disciplined and responds and acts well when criticized. Great teammates encourages you both when you are doing well and having an off day.

Stone Thiel

Senior, Galesburg

Basketball

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

I would definitely probably do Down Hill Ski racing, although I have never done it, it just sounds like a good and fun time!

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

Definitely La Gondola or Iron Spike

Best quote or advice from your winter coach?

Coach Thiel this winter has been heavy on the “Why Not Us?” Saying. I really like this quote/question because it gives the team motivation to block out all the negative energy.

What makes a great teammate?

A great teamate is always there for you no matter what, always encourages during the slumps, and just overall speaks positivity into your head when things aren’t going your way. A good teamate off the court could also be just helping you in the class you are struggling in and need help with!

Grady Hickey

Sophomore, Galesburg

Football, Basketball, Baseball

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

If I had to choose another winter sport I would probably choose hockey. I’ve always enjoyed watching hockey and my cousins also used to play so I would watch them play while growing up.

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

El Racherito would be my choice if I had a $25 gift card. My family and I usually eat there a couple times a month and it is also my favorite restaurant in town.

Best quote or advice from your winter coach?

My favorite quote my coach uses is “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard”. This keeps me motivated to work as hard as I can.

What makes a great teammate?

Throughout the years of me playing sports I have had many great teammates and they all usually have the same thing in common. They all know the right time to be serious and the time to mess around and have fun. They are also all great leaders on and off the court/field.

Izzy Kennedy

Sophomore, Galesburg

Swimming, Basketball, Track

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

I would do hockey! It seems like a fun sport, and I want to learn how to skate.  Why not?

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

I would want it to be to Jersey Mikes, because I love their sandwiches.

Best quote or advice from your winter coach?

The best advice I have ever gotten is “Focus on the things you can control.” This is a repeated message, because I tend to overthink the little things that I cannot control during the game. I can always control me, so if I focus on me, then the rest of the pieces tend to fall into place.

What makes a great teammate?

A great teammate for me is someone who is always supportive of their teammates. A good teammate is always working their hardest not just during a game, but also at practice. Most importantly, a good teammate doesn’t let things impact them when they are on the court.

Antonia Kisler

Sophomore, Sandburg

Basketball

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

I actually really don’t like snow or the cold, so I probably wouldn’t do any of those. I hate the cold weather! But if I had to choose one, maybe hockey because it’s inside!

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

I love Baked, so I would want a gift certificate there! I love their pizza!

Best quote or advice your winter coach uses?

Don't count your misses!- Rick Pitino

How you do anything is how you do everything. Everything matters.

What makes a great teammate?

The qualities of a great teammate are always willing to do the best for the team, being a team player, encouraging, and just an overall amazing person!

Leslie Kelley IV

Senior, Galesburg

Basketball

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

I honestly wouldn't be able to pick anything on ice because I don't know how to ice skate, so I would pick downhill ski racing. I broke my arm while snowboarding, so skiing would be very avoided too.

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

Definitely Chipotle. It has the perfect meals with high protein and always tastes good.

Best quote or advice your winter coach uses?

"Would you rather have 3 months of excuses or 3 months of progress?".

What makes a great teammate?

A great teammate to me means that you can build me up but also hold me accountable. A great teammate is there for his/her teammates on and off the court no matter what.

Lily Furrow

Senior, Galesburg

Swimming, Basketball, Track

If your school didn’t have your winter sport, but had downhill skiing, ski jumping, hockey, or curling, what would you try?

I would choose downhill ski racing. I enjoy skiing and I like going fast. It would take some practice, but with the right balance and technique I think it would be really fun.

What restaurant would you want to get a $25 gift card to?

It’s not necessarily a “restaurant” but I’d chose orange cup side hustle. The food that I’ve had there is always good, plus I’m always getting their drinks.

Best quote or advice your winter coach uses?

The best advice that I’ve received is “play hard, play together, and have fun” I’ve been told this by my basketball coaches since my freshman year.  It’s stuck with me because it doesn’t just apply to basketball, but to the world itself. If you conquer things while trying, working together as a group, and having fun all at the same time, no one is going to stop you.

What makes a great teammate?

A great teammate is many things, but one that stands out the most to me is being supportive in your training. Swim is not an easy sport, anyone can tell you that, but having the right people to push you and keep you motivated will make you and your teammate better. Having connections with the teammate outside of your sport as well is good. You know you can say the hard truths that they need to hear, and you know they won’t snap at you in return. I strive to be that teammate towards others.
