Bumpy, Lincoln, and A Snow Storm

In 1959-60, Lawrence “Bumpy” Nixon was a senior, and his brother, Lincoln Nixon was a junior. 

Bumpy had played for Quincy HS as a sophomore in 1957-8. He led Quincy in scoring as a sophomore. In 1958-9, Bumpy and Lincoln moved to Galesburg with their mother. They moved into a neighborhood close to their Uncle Harold Ewing, Sr. Their move from Quincy created quite a storm in Quincy, Galesburg, and with the IHSA.

Zach Creglow on March 10, 2010, shortly after Bumpy’s death wrote a story in which he shares thoughts people had about Bumpy and his career at Galesburg HS. In the story, Zach says that in 1988, Coach John Thiel said the following, “The best ball player that ever played at GHS in my tenure was Bumpy Nixon. Click on the following to read the story:

Later in the same month, Tom Wilson wrote an article where he shared some of the exploits on the court of Lincoln Nixon. When Bumpy turned 19, the IHSA ruled him as ineligible. In the Super without Bumpy playing, the Streaks won in OT behind Lincoln’s clutch free throws. Click on the following to read the story:

In 2018, Mike Trueblood looked back on the Silver Streaks 1960 Supersectional win over DeKalb. While the game was an OT thriller, it may not have been as big of a thriller as the attempt to get home in a snow storm. Click on the following to read the story:
