Tom Wilson Describes a Thriller

Tom Wilson in the Register-Mail describes one of the most thrilling GHS girls finishes....

(It should be noted that he does not mention the injury of Coach Rux in this game. He was so excited and jumped so high, he pulled a calf muscle so he could hardly walk for a week after the game.)

One of the most exciting basketball games in Galesburg High School girls basketball history closed out 1997 in a blaze of glory. The miraculous shot occurred in the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.
The event was the inaugural "Grand Championship" of the Bloomington-Normal Holiday Classic Tournament. The GHS girls reached the grand championship against Mendota after defeating Normal Community, Normal U-High and Olympia. Both teams entered the championship with 13 victories and only one blemish.
The Silver Streaks found a lid on the basket converting only three first quarter baskets on 17 attempts and trailed after the opening stanza 24-10. Although GHS picked up the tempo in the second quarter by scoring 27 points, the Streaks still trailed at half 41-37.

Streaks Crush Charleston

In one of our most impressive outings of the year, the Streaks pounded Charleston. The Streaks forced 30+ turnovers on their way to a 30 plus lead in the early fourth quarter. This is the story from the Charleston newspaper....

Moving on to the evening game, a comeback wasn’t inevitable, but too far out of reach.
A basket by Mitzi Terry had the score tied at six, but turnovers allowed Galesburg to go on an 11-0 run.
In a game that featured a season high 36 turnovers for Charleston, the Lady Trojans had 25 turnovers just in the first half.
“Honestly, we have nothing to simulate that kind of pressure in practice,” said Miller. “You do with what you can, but we also made a lot of turnovers that were our fault.”

Streaks over J'ville

From the Jacksonville newspaper....

The Jacksonville High girls took Galesburg to overtime Saturday evening at the 10th Annual Country Financial Prep Showcase at Illinois College. But not one inch further.
The Silver Streaks hit four of five shots, including three 3-pointers, and outscored the Crimsons 13-0 in the extra four minutes and rolled to a 79-66 victory.
Jacksonville (7-7) led by as many as 10 points as late as the middle of the third quarter, but playing only six regulars against a Galesburg team that kept substituting five-for-five all game long eventually caught up with the Crimsons.
Jacksonville committed 41 turnovers Saturday — 27 of them after halftime, compared to only seven by the Streaks (8-5) over the same length of time.

Galesburg Thanksgiving Tourney

Our field for the 2013 GHS Thanksgiving Tourney is set. LeRoy left our field but we had two schools on our "waiting list." We chose to add Peoria Christian to the field. Christian is having a great year as they are undefeated at 11-0. So next year we think we will have another very good field with-

Galesburg
Alleman
UTHS
Springfield
Illini West
East Peoria
Dunlap
Metamora
Peoria Christian
Knoxville
Freeport
Decatur Eisenhower

Daniel Inouye- Courageous & Honest

Courage takes many forms. This is a story of a man who had the courage to join the army in WWII, and then had courage in battle. Upon returning to the US as an injured soldier, he began playing cards in the VA Hospital in Michigan with another wounded soldier- Bob Dole. Daniel Inouye had planned to go into medicine, but after talking with Dole, they both realized they could make a difference in politics. Eventually both were elected to the US Senate.

The following is a story from the LA Times about an inspiring American....

In the summer of 1987, Inouye rebuked Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North, a key figure in the Iran-Contra scandal, which involved the sale of embargoed weapons to Iran in order to divert the resulting profits to anti-communist rebels in Nicaragua.
"It was painful to all of us to sit here and listen to your testimony," the senator said. "It was equally painful that you lied and misled for what you believed to be a good cause."
"Everyone in the Senate not only admired Danny Inouye, but they trusted him," Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement. "We all knew he would do the moral thing regardless of the consequences — whether it was passing judgment on a president during Watergate or on another president in the Iran-Contra hearings. And Danny always remembered where he came from — and how hard his family had to struggle."

What the heck?

Yesterday at 6:07pm, I got a text from an unkown number that simply said, "What the heck?" I had no idea who it was from and I guessed what they were asking about. I did not respond. A little later the person identified themselves a reporter who I am also friends with. They were asking what had happened at Manual.

We had lost our 4th straight game. We knew we had a tough week when we played Rocky and Maine South- state rated teams. So when we dropped both, we were disappointed but probably not shocked. But this week we had UT a .500 team and Manual a below .500 team on the schedule. It seemed like time to get back on track and time to get the bounce back in our step. Time to get that feel of being a state ranked team. Time to get that feel of a team ready to get back in the conference championship race.

To the surprise of not only the reporter, to the surprise of our players and our team- we did not get the bounce back in our step. We lost both games. Both games were similar in some ways. We started slow but seemed to have things in decent shape at half, and then in both games actually took 5+ point leads in the third quarter. But in both games the wheels came off in the fourth quarter. Some of it was foul trouble, some of it was poor choices on offense, some of it was ineffective pressing.

Disappointment

It was not a good night. A time out was necessary in the first 30 seconds. For the third game in a row, we lacked focus on our game plan, dug a hole, and lost. Disappointing!

From the Argus....

By Terry Duckett, tduckett@qconline.com
It was a Western Big 6 Conference girls' basketball matchup featuring contrasting styles Thursday night.

With Galesburg bringing its prodigious 3-point shooting skills to the Panther Den, the United Township Panthers found that taking the inside track was ultimately the key to victory as they were able to outgun the Silver Streaks to earn a crucial 75-69 conference win.

Dani Teel- Q&A

1. I first started playing basketball seriously in 3rd grade, but ever since I was able to hold a basketball I have been playing.

2. Two people have inspired to play: my dad has always wanted me to play and has encouraged me, whether it was taking me to Illinois games or working every night at home on our court. The second person is my grandpa, Don Teel. One day he was talking to my dad and he said "Dan, this is going to be your ball player" & ever since my dad told my that, I have been motivated to play to my greatest potential.

3. My best memory was playing against my Jr. Streaks basketball teammates when I was on the Costa team, or beating playing against our biggest rivals Canton.

Wonderful World of AAU??

I don't know the inside story but one wonders if this is another story of the world of AAU basketball. The Davis' transferring to Annawan may be for all sorts of geographic or family reasons, but...

As I read this story from the Argus, I could not help but focus on the part at the end which says, "it will reunite her with her AAU teammates." This seems to be a common place occurence throughout high school athletics. IF indeed that is the case, it is sad.

From the Argus....

One of the top girls' basketball players in the Quad-Cities is on the move.

In the age of social media, news travels fast. So Tuesday morning, when Cierra Davis told her classmates that she, twin sister Dominique and sophomore brother Jalen were no longer going to attend Alleman High School, it became news. Stunning, in fact, to most involved.

Late Tuesday night, the speculation ended.

"I can confirm that we have had the release of records and that they will be starting school here (today),'' said Joe Buresh, Annawan principal and superintendent. "They have established residency in the Annawan School District.''

The Energy Bus

The following are some thoughts from the Energy Bus by Jon Gordon.

Rule #1- You're the Driver of Your Bus

"Always remember that you are the driver of your bus. It's the most important of the rules because if you don't take responsibility for your life and control of your bus hen you can't take it where you want to go."

"Of course you can seek directions and advice along the way, but remember it's your bus and your trip."

More people die Monday morning at 9:00am than any other time. "Think about it, people would rather die than go to work."

"Choice is your greatest gift. No one can choose your attitude. No one else can choose your energy."

Why Maine South?

Pizza at Pizza Villa in DeKalb on the way back.
Streaks lost a tough one to Maine South on Saturday, going down 55-45. It is really the first time all year someone was able to totally dominate the tempo vs. the Streaks. 45 points is our season low.

Maine South has a very nice team, and will be highly rated in the 4A polls. This game got MS to an impressive 10-1 record. They are talented and well coached. They have a 6'4" center with a full ride to the University of Illinois, and their point guard has a full ride to St.Louis University. So they have a tough inside-outside combo at work.

Streaks Loss to RI

Tough night for the Streaks last night, and it may have been an even tougher night for the fans. At first glance the 86-78 score would make it seem like it must have been an exciting game. But few fans who were there would have ranked it as an exciting game. The game took barely under two hours (normal games would be about 75 minutes).

Argus- Rocks over Streaks

From the Argus-- sounds like the only question left is if the Rocks win the conference outright....

GALESBURG -- Before the high school girls basketball season started, Rock Island senior Shavonne Brewer said she wanted the Rocks basketball team to make history.

On Thursday night they did, beating Galesburg in Thiel Gymnasium for the first time in 20 years, outrunning the Streaks, 86-78.

At times it was ugly, the teams combining for 60 fouls and 73 turnovers in the 32-minute game.

Chloe Anderson- Q&A

Chloe Anderson has played for the varsity the last three years. She only has one gear- all out. This fall she had a tremendous impact on our team during fall open gyms and workouts. Her tremendous work ethic during Insanity, in the weight room, and with basketball self-improvement was contagious. She raised the bar and helped a lot of players work harder they might have if she had not been around.

When did you first start playing basketball?
I played biddy basketball at the YMCA when I was four.

Is there someone or some event that got you fired up about playing basketball?
My mom coached me during YMCA basketball. She used to play and we had a lot of fun doing that together.

Three Daily Fights

This was passed onto me by Coach Dougherty. It is from Bo Schembechler, the former Michigan coach.

3 Daily Fights

1.   Division From Within

2.   Public Perception

3.  Daily Fatigue

Lexi Daniels- Q&A

Lexi is a freshmen on the varsity. She has made a nice transition from junior to the varsity level because of her unselfishness- low ego combined with a good work ethic. She quickly earned the respect of the older players with her approach, and her ability to play. She is off to a great year, and I anticipate she will just keep getting better and better!

When did you first start playing basketball?
When I was in 2nd grade at the YMCA.

Is there someone or some event that got you fired up about playing basketball?
When I got to jr.streaks and I met Sami,Kailyn,Marissa, Shayli etc. and we worked really well together!

What is your favorite basketball memory from grade school travel bb or from jh basketball?
My favorite memory would be 8th grade when we only lost to churchill by 4 points because our 7th grade year we got demolished.

Streaks Over Dunlap

Galesburg defeated Dunlap 80-66 on Saturday. Dunlap came out early and made it clear they were not going to be a push over as they lead for most of the first quarter. The Streaks took the lead in the late first quarter and held the lead the rest of the game before opening up the game in the fourth quarter.

Dunlap's strategy was to play extremely aggressively on the defensive end. As a result, they got into foul trouble.

Just like last year, it appears our defense is our strength. We forced 40 turnovers with Diggins getting 8 steals, Williams 5, Kelso 3, and Lieber 3.

Sharron Diggins came up huge with 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 steals. Casey Williams had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Jessica Lieber and Allison Mangieri each had 9 points.

Next up for the Streaks will be the undefeated Rocks on Thursday night at Thiel Gym.

Sabrina Clay-Q&A

Sabrina Clay is a sophomore on the varsity. She was on the freshmen team last year and jumped clear to the varsity. She made an impression on the coaches this spring because she never missed anything, she worked hard, and she was pretty good!!

In preseason one day at practice we were doing alot of conditioning at the end of practice. Sabrina came to us and said she felt light headed like she was going to faint. We told her to step out. At that point we were almost done with the workout. I told her to stand with Coach Allison. Later Coach Allison said Sabrina was upset about not running, she didn't want to let her teammates down. Guess that is one of the reasons Sabrina is on the varsity- she gets it- she is committed to her teammates!!

Allison Mangieri- Q&A

Allison is a senior, captain for the Streaks. Allison has the ability to play multiple positions for us because of her athleticism, intelligence, and attitude. She is a GREAT team player!!

3rd grade

Is there someone or some event that got you fired up about playing basketball?
My older sister Dorothy got me fired up about playing basketball.
