William Allen- Memorial Day

Plaques at entrance of GHS.
Plaque at entrance to Galesburg High School
dedicated to the 64 faculty and students
killed in World War II.
There is a plaque near the entrance to Galesburg High School to honor students and faculty who have died in service of our country. On the plaque honoring WWII dead, there are 63 GHS students named and 1 GHS faculty member named who all died in WWII.

It is hard to put the magnitude of this loss in perspective. From the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 until VJ Day on September 2, 1945, the United States was at war for 45 months. That means in Galesburg from 1941 thru 1945, there was a funeral for a GHS student or faculty member roughly every 21 days. The War effected individuals, families, and obviously communities.

Title IX Complaint at Macomb

A parent of a Macomb HS female athlete has filed a Title IX complaint, with specific focus on fact they have the girls sports use a second gym which the mother considers inferior.

It will be interesting to see the results of this, as many of you are aware, Rocky and Quincy still use a "secondary gym" for their girls sports also.

The Macomb Board of Education responded May 15 to a Title IX inquiry alleging inequalities between boys and girls sports at Macomb Senior High School, and as a result of that inquiry, the district will begin providing girls participating in a sport practice at Washington Street Gym — a facility located several miles off the high school campus — with round-trip transportation from the high school.

Matt Bollant & Dani Teel

Today I was brought a present by Dani Teel. Dani does not completely get the concept of how to win over or bribe the coach with presents. Dani brought in an autographed picture of the new Illini women's coach, Matt Bollant. I think she honestly thinks she can convert me into an Illini fan.

Dani and her father Dan went down to meet the three new Illini coaches in Peoria last night. Dan was a manager for Big 10 Championship team of 1984. He is a huge Illini fan, and Dani is a huge Illini fan.

Wyman- 4 Classes

Jim Wyman in his blog essay expresses his dislike for the 4 Class basketball system. What do you think?

Keep 4 Classes
Go Back to 2 Classes
Go Way Back to 1 Class

Jim Wyman & the IHSA

Jim Wyman is a retired English teacher and a semi-retired radio man. Whenever I have hips replaced, he takes over for me for 6 weeks. He has done it twice.

Jim has a blog where he writes about whatever he wants to write about. This is an interesting essay he wrote this spring about the IHSA not being willing to adjust to help kids who were taking the AP exams. Enjoy....

Summer League Record

Getting our concessions lined up for League!
We have 81 teams entered in Galesburg Summer League. That tops 79 of a year ago. The first night of league- Tuesday, June 5 is only about 3 weeks away.

We have 37 varsity teams, 28 frosh-soph teams, and 16 junior high teams entered. We are the 2nd biggest Summer League in Illinois (Maine West is #1).

Headlining our Summer League are three teams off Final Four State appearances- Springfield, Annawan, and LeRoy. In addition to these three teams, we have 11 other teams who were State Rated- Galesburg, Alleman, Geneseo, Havana, Knoxville, Morton, Peoria Central, UTHS, and Wethersfield.

It looks to be another exciting summer of basketball!!

In the first week- June 5, 7, 8, 9- we estimate there will be close to 100 games played in Galesburg.

Coaches Have Favorites?

This is great quote from Get Recruited--

My favorite players are the ones that work the hardest in the classroom + in the floor. = Favoritism.

Wonderful Surprise

Dan Sullivan and I reliving Milwaukee Bucks
Camp days with "Smedley."
Saturday, April 13 we were invited to party for Kyle Barshinger. Kyle was home from college and his birthday is on April 17. Amy told me to make sure to get a card for Kyle. We were going out to eat at Sully's at 6:30pm and then going to the party for Kyle at Side Trax at 7:30pm. At about 6:10pm, Amy asked if I had gotten the card- I had not. She told me to go get one. So I hurried to Walgreen's and got a card.

Gregg Popovich- What Makes Him Great

Coach of the year isn't a good way to describe Gregg Popovich. It's too limiting. It implies he's about one season and one team.

What Popovich has done goes far beyond guiding the Spurs to the best record in the league this season. He has created a template for NBA success. His influence extends so far that his presence is likely to be felt in the NBA Finals even if the Spurs don't make it.
