The Galesburg High School girls basketball team began their season on Monday with an early morning and an evening practice.
Galesburg coach Evan Massey, who is entering his 35th season at the helm of the Silver Streaks, said this year’s team should have more offense than last year’s team, which finished with an overall mark of 27-6 and advanced to the sectional semifinals.
“We return a pretty athletic group,” he said. “Last year, our greatest strength was we were a better defensive team than offensive team and this year we’ve improved offensively.
“Hopefully, we are a deeper group this year,” Massey added. “This fall, we happened to have a lot of girls not involved in fall sports and there was enough of them that they got to play.”
Allison Mangieri, Rainee Sibley, Dani Teel and Chloe Anderson are four of Massey’s six seniors who didn’t participate in any fall sports and helped set the tone for the Silver Streaks before the season officially began. Jessica Lieber and Sharron Diggins are the other two Galesburg seniors.
“In the offseason, we had six seniors who set a nice tone throughout that time,” Massey said. “The strength for us as a team is our six seniors. They give us strength and stability. Hopefully, it leads the way this year.
“A nice thing about our style is we have eight girls coming back who were on the floor when games were decided,” he added. “The advantage of playing the way we do is we have a lot of experience.”
Haley Kelso is one of Massey’s players who doesn’t have any experience playing in “The System.”
The junior, who played for Knoxville High School last season, moved to Galesburg with her family two weekends ago and began class at GHS last Monday. She won’t be suiting up for the Silver Streaks for their first five games of the season, because of the IHSA transfer rule.
“We run more sets than people think we do and that part is overwhelming for Haley, but she is a nice 3-point shooter and that’s what we do is shoot a lot of three’s,” Massey said. “Any of our kids who are moving from sophomore to varsity have to adjust as well. They pick up pieces. Adjustments are part of it. Haley will have to adjust.
“It’s a different game during the season,” he added. “The intensity level is cranked up. A lot of the kids are going to have to make adjustments.”
