Galesburg Over IVC

The first time Galesburg played IVC was in the 1979 Manual Tourney for the championship of the tourney. Galesburg won. That was Galesburg's first championship- ever! We used a 2-2-1 press with one of the best back courts in GHS history- Amy Crisman, Lesa Moore, and Cookie Rosine. All three of them went on to be selected to the GHS Hall of Fame. Other notables on that team were Teresa Powell, Denise Parmenter, Lyndale Pickrel, and my sister in law, Amanda Allen.



The last time we played at IVC, we lost in the 1988 sectional first round game to Moline. At that point we just could not get by Moline. That team featured Alicia Brannon, Linda Carlson, Vicki Fields, and Shannon Johnson.

The last time we played IVC was in the 1994 first round sectional at GHS. We had Amber West and Bonny Apsey inside and sharp shooter Stef Mitchell on the perimeter. We had a pair of sophomore guards in Sara Wood and Ami Pendry. We jumped to a nice lead but could not hold it, and were beaten. It would be noted that most of that group came back on won our first Sectional the next year.

Our present group was unaware of the game being a revenge match- none were born.

Monday night our defense came to play- it forced 38 turnovers on the evening. Jessica Lieber had 6 steals, Hannah Smith 4, and Sadee Hamilton also had 4 steals.

We were slow to get started offensively but when we did, we managed 14 threes. The most impressive thing is that we had 7 different players drain threes. And we had 10 different players pass out assists. And when we missed, we hit the boards. We had 34 offensive rebounds. We were led by Rainee Sibley with 5, Hamilton with 4, and Mangieri/Smith/Anderson/Junk all pulled down 3.

We had 6 players in double figures- Hannah Smith 15, Sadee Hamilton 11, Carley Weigand 11, Rainee Sibley 10, Sharron Diggins 10, and Myra Diggins 10. Jessica Lieber with 9 and Paige Klinck with 8 just missed double figures. It is especially exciting to see our two soph players- Weigand and Smith coming on at this time of the year!!
